Argentina are Copa America champions! Angel Di Maria scores, Lionel Messi lifts the trophy!

It was Angel Di Maria the goal scorer as Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 at the Maracana in the Copa America final.

Angel Di Maria has not been a regular starter for Argentina at this Copa America but Lionel Scaloni put his trust in him and it paid off.

Rodrigo De Paul with a ball deep from midfield which found Di Maria and the 33 year old chipped Ederson to give Argentina the 1-0 lead. Lionel Scaloni’s team were in control for most of the half with Brazilian getting some half chances but they were blocked by the Argentina back line.

Brazil applied the pressure early in the second half and in one opportunity they even had the ball in the back of the net but it was called for offside. A second effort by Brazil saw Emiliano Martinez make a big save to maintain the lead.

Lionel Messi had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 from just a few yards out but he slipped and Ederson got the ball.

Cristian Romero, who had a solid match was substituted out for German Pezzella and Pezzella with a huge block after coming on denied what looked to be a Brazil goal.

The referee blew the final whistle and Argentina were crowned Copa America champions. The first senior trophy since the 1993 Copa America!

Copa America final: Argentina vs. Brazil match preview, Lionel Messi vs. Neymar

The biggest rivalry in South American football is on: Argentina will face Brazil this Saturday in the Copa America final, at the Maracanã Stadium. With Messi and Neymar as the stars of their squads, both national teams will seek to lift the trophy.

As throughout the whole tournament, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has not confirmed the lineup yet. With some doubts, according to the national media, this would be Argentina’s starting eleven vs. Brazil:

On the other hand, Brazil’s coach Tite seems to have fewer uncertainties in his team’s lineup. During the whole Copa America, Tite has not made many changes between matches. The final would not be the exception.

Brazil will not be able to count on two players that are usually starters. One of them is Gabriel Jesus, who will be serving the second of a two-game suspension for the karate kick he delivered against Chile. The other one is Alex Sandro, who will miss the final due to a left hamstring injury.

Per reports by the Brazilian media, this would be Brazil’s starting eleven vs. Argentina:

Even though hosts Brazil have shown a good level throughout the whole Copa America and from the very beginning they became the main favorites to lift the trophy, the “seleção” had also shown some low performances in some aspects of their game.

During the group stage, Brazil defeated Venezuela 3-0, Peru 4-0, and Colombia 2-1. In their last game in group B, they drew 1-1 vs. Ecuador, where they mixed some starters with substitutes. In the knockout phase, they beat Chile 1-0 in the quarterfinal and Peru 1-0 in the semifinal.

On the other hand, Argentina repeated pattern throughout the whole Copa America and the last two qualifying games: they take the lead early playing good football and after that, the team’s level starts to go down.

Like Brazil, Argentina advanced as group winners. The Albiceleste drew 1-1 with Chile in their opening match and won 1-0 vs. Uruguay. Then, they defeated Paraguay 1-0, and Bolivia 4-1. In the quarterfinal match, Argentina defeated Ecuador 3-0, and in the semifinal, they won over Colombia through a penalty shootout (3)1-1(2).

Both Lionel Messi and Neymar have been key players for their countries on the road to the final. In addition, both are looking forward to win their first Copa America. They both did it with the U-23 in the Olympics: Messi in Beijing 2008 and Neymar in Rio 2016. Neymar was part of the Brazil team which won the 2013 Confederations Cup and while Brazil lifted the Copa America in 2019, Neymar couldn’t play due to an injury.

Although the “Clásico de las Américas” record is extremely close, Brazil leads by two over Argentina. In 107 games played, Brazil won 42 times, Argentina 40, while they drew 25. Here, the scores from the last five games between Argentina and Brazil:

November 15th, 2019 – Friendly
Brazil 0-1 Argentina

July 2nd, 2019 – Copa America (semi-final)
Brazil 2-0 Argentina

October 16th, 2018 – Friendly
Argentina 0-1 Brazil

June 9th, 2017 – Friendly
Brazil 0-1 Argentina

November 10th, 2016 – World Cup Qualifiers
Brazil 3-0 Argentina

Unlike the quarter finals and semi finals of the Copa America, in case of a draw after 90 minutes, there will be extra time, then possible penalties. The referee will be Esteban Ostojich of Uruguay.

Cristian Romero asks Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni to play in Copa America final

Cristian Romero has reportedly asked Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni to play in the Copa America final.

Romero, who has not played since Argentina’s group stage match win vs. Paraguay on June 21, has missed the the last three matches for Argentina due to a knee injury. Per a report by TyC Sports, Romero has asked Scaloni to play him in the final.

However, one thing that could go against Romero is that he has not played in over two weeks.

Emiliano Martínez of Argentina on Copa America final: “We are going to give it our all”

Emiliano Martínez spoke at a press conference on Friday where he commented on the Copa America final.

Martínez was the player selected to speak at the press conference on Friday as all of South America prepares for the final on Saturday. Dibu was the hero for Argentina vs. Colombia in the semi finals and he will want the same outcome in the final. Speaking at a press conference, here’s what he had to say:

“I knew I wasn’t going to be present for the birth of my daughter and that made me stronger. I worked with my psychologist to dedicate myself 100% to the Argentina national team. The captain helped me a lot and I am enjoying it.”

He also commented on the penalty shootout in the semi finals:

“There are many who study or watch or concentrate on the steps (when the player goes to take the penalty). We did everything. We studied the opponent with the goalkeepers, with the goalkeeper coach.

“I decided to study the rival. I knew they liked to look, I had to wait until the end. It was my night.

On what he said during the penalty shootouts:

“The truth is, I don’t care. In football, a lot of things are said, on and off the pitch. It’s a football match, these things stay on the pitch. I am concentrated on helping the defenders.

“I’m not going to think about if they can hear me or not. Everything is heard these days. I have always played the same way, now you hear things that you didn’t hear before. It’s normal in football.”

Dibu and Colombian goalkeeper Ospina both played together at Arsenal and Dibu had this to say about it:

“I have a good relationship with Ospina and I congratulated him on his penalties in the quarter finals. It was something I wanted to do, we shared three years at Arsenal, we would be together in the training’s. I am proud to have reached a final with my country and to give them some joy during a very difficult time.”

In regards to the final itself:

“It has been several years that we have been waiting for a final here, at the Maracaná and we are going to give it our all.

“The tears were those of pride. It’s a dream of mine to play in a final and to lift a trophy with the Argentina national team. There’s no better scenario than to play against Brazil at the Maracaná.

“We have made a lot of trips going from Brazil to Argentina, it was very tiring but we worked together and that will have us strength for tomorrow.

“Ever since I was a kid, it has been a dream of mine to play a final with the Argentina national team at the Maracaná. The entire Argentine public wants to see us win in Brazil.”
