Angel Di Maria comments on winning the Copa America with Argentina, his goal, the team

Angel Di Maria commented on winning the Copa America with Argentina, his goal against Brazil and the team.

Di Maria will forever go down in the history books as the player who scored a goal in the final to give Argentina their first trophy in 28 years. A goal in the final and against Brazil. Speaking in an interview with TyC Sports, here is what he had to say:

“The Copa America means everything. It’s what I had been looking for since I was a kid and everything that is happening to me now.

“When I see the Copa America, a million things go through my head. First, the ugly moments that have happened to me and after that everything beautiful. Having won a trophy after 28 years, the happiness of the people and the joy from my family. We are all part of this beautiful thing that will be remembered forever.”

If it is the most important goal he has ever scored:

“Hopefully there’s another goal even more important in the short term.”

About the goal:

“Even before the goalkeeper came out, I knew what I was going to do. Chipping it is better for me than hitting it hard. I knew there was no offside, nothing. It was a goal.”

Regarding the team and having the fans back:

“It’s a spectacular atmosphere. We haven’t changed a lot of players and that makes the team stronger every time and we know each other more every time. The happiness that you breathe is something very beautiful.

“It’s not the same thing having fans in Europe than in Argentina. It’s something else. After having won the Copa America, the people come with an immense emotion and it makes us live something so beautiful.”

In regards to the match against Peru:

“It’s going to be a messed up match against Peru. They need points and we have to keep going with the same objecetive of getting the three points to get to Qatar as early as possible. Qualifying is the most important thing to continue to work with a peace of mind.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni press conference, comments on team, Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni held a press conference on Wednesday where he spoke about the team, Lionel Messi, Leandro Paredes, the match against Brazil in November.

Lionel Scaloni spoke to the press ahead of Thursday’s match against Peru in the World Cup qualifiers. This would be the third of three World Cup qualifying matches for Argentina in October, having drew the first away against Paraguay and won the second 3-0 vs. Uruguay.

Scaloni commented on the team and the match against Peru on Thursday. Here is what he had to say:

“I won’t confirm the team but I will stay along the same lines as the last matches. Maybe some retouches. It will be a very clear match. If we do a few changes it will be because the match needs it, not because of form.

“Peru play well with the ball, they have good players. They come here having worked together for a while, they have a very good midfield. They are not a team that is used to sitting back.”

About Lionel Messi:

“I think he is fine with the team, he feels comfortable with his team mates and that makes him even better. Without the team, his performance would not be as reflected.”

The Argentina coach also spoke about Leandro Paredes and his form:

“It doesn’t surprise me. He is progressing day by day and he gives us a lot of things. He is adding a lot to the aspect of when he doesn’t have the ball and for us, he is an important player. He’s in good form and we are happy with him.”

In addition, Scaloni spoke about the match against Brazil in November:

“Against Brazil, we will play in San Juan. Beyond that River’s pitch pleases us because of the grass and everything it offers, I think it’s only fair that the national team can play in other cities. There are other matches to go to and other places, hopefully in the same way.”

Regarding the team:

“The feeling is that the people feel an identity with these players. That is the most important thing.

“I don’t like to be euphoric or that negative. It’s clear that as long as the team works and gives us positive signals, we don’t have to tweak so much. We would only make modifications in question with where the opponent could hurt us. I ask the players not to relax.

“I can’t assure you that there are seven which are starters. We are playing here tomorrow and we have to go back with the same form because there are team mates behind them that are very anxious to play and are the first that when things are going well and their team mates win, are the first first to understand the situation.

“I ask them not to relax because their team mates train to play. That no one thinks they are a starter. I don’t dare say that they are starters but if there is a base in which we are confident with it’s because they have given us results. But if we see that there are no good signals, we have no problem in that someone else can come in because they’re at the same level.

“Beyond winning or losing, what I have been saying and what I will continue to say is that these players are not going to let us down. There will be matches where we will play better or worse, difficult matches, games that we have to play a different way because the opponent is better but the team dynamics are marked. The people feel identified with us and that’s what’s the most important thing. The result and everything that comes after is a result of all of this.

“The idea is always the same: To try and improve depending on the opponent. It’s not that we will adapt to the opponent but we believe that there are nuances that each team has and we have the availability of different players and we are taking advantage of them.

“But we always think about improving our team. Not thinking too much about the damage that the opponents can do to us. We try to improve in every aspect, we value that match after match. Sometimes it would be the same and something we will make a few changes.”

In regards to Sergio Aguero:

“His case, like the other guys that couldn’t be here, the most important is that they compete at their club and that makes things difficult for us. We have a squad of enormous talent, with great strikers and the most difficult decision is the final decision. It interests us that they play at their club, that they do well and we will take our time to take a decision.

About Lucas Alario:

“He is a player that we like and we value, every time he has been available, he has been with us. There are a lot of players called to the squad, you have to make decisions and a few have to be left out. I selected him for the last match, against Paraguay he was on the bench. They are decisions we have to take and he is a guy who has trained very well.”

He also spoke about the match against Uruguay and the 3-0 win:

“I won’t dare to say if the match against Uruguay was the best or not. But having played at home with our people, makes everything more beautiful. We have played very good matches and say that we were better but playing at home makes it more beautiful.”

Sergio Agüero scores first goal for FC Barcelona in 2-2 draw vs. Cornella

Sergio Agüero scored his first goal for FC Barcelona.

Agüero made his long awaited debut for FC Barcelona on Wednesday in a friendly training match against Cornella. While the match ended in a 2-2 draw, it was Agüero’s first time wearing a Barcelona shirt in a match.

Barcelona’s new number 19 dribbled around the goalkeeper and scored in the draw. He joined the club on a free after spending 10 years at Manchester City where he became the club’s all time leading goal scorer.

The Argentine was initially set to be part of the national team for the September and October World Cup qualifying matches but an injury kept him out of the squad. He has yet to play a league match for the club.

Diego Simeone on Lionel Messi with Argentina, Copa America, coaching him

3

Diego Simeone spoke about Lionel Messi with the Argentina national team, winning the Copa America and coaching him.

Simeone is regarded as one of the best coaches in the world. He has coached Atletico Madrid to more than one league title along with other domestic and continental trophies. However, he has always come up against Lionel Messi, he has never coached him. Speaking in an interview with Ole, Simeone spoke about what he thinks about Messi with the current Argentina national team and if the players were finally able to play with Messi and not be fans:

“I truly believe it’s difficult to tell from the outside, we can give our opinion on what we see but a lot of the things what’s happening on the inside is different. And the truth is, they know.

“But what is seen from the outside is that, Leo’s personality, his presence, is more visible. And in every factor. It was always visible for what he represented. But ever since this cycle started with Scaloni, he’s started to walk. There is a Leo who is seen as everyone always wanted to see him.

“He had his time to get to this moment. I don’t know how it’s handled on the inside but it’s what you see from the outside.”

In regards to Lionel Messi as a player:

“I never got to train Messi but knowing him very little, with the very little talks I have had with him, what I would say is that he wants to win. He wants to win… All of the expectations that are generated and the illusion of winning, it’s thrown to him because he is a winner. It’s not that he wants to play a different way. That’s a lie.

“He is the first that wants to win. And that was represented clearly in this Copa America.”

A Copa America champion himself, Simeone commented on Lionel Messi winning the Copa America with Argentina and if it was a relief:

“There is no doubt that he took the knife out (from his back) by winning the Copa America. That he won a thousand Champions Leagues, a thousand leagues, that he has 200 million goals, that he has a Ballon d’Or and he couldn’t win with Argentina!

“It was incredible but life at times ends up giving you things a little later and well, you have to accept it like it is. What I have always valued about him is that he never gave up, he never shied away from his place as a protagonist to get angry with the world, to say I’m not going anymore, I’m walking away.

“He went there, there, there, there and it’s like life, in the end, you keep knocking, knocking, knocking and one day it falls.”

About how he never got to coach Lionel Messi:

“I’ll tell you a detail that happened when that happened with him at Barcelona. We called Luis (Suarez), with all the respect, to ask him how Messi was, if he was anxious, to see if there was even the smallest possibility, imagining that he could come to Atletico de Madrid.

“I mean, I didn’t call Leo but Luis. But the situation lasted three hours because PSG already, obviously, was obsessed with him. The truth is that it never happened for us to meet. He was always with Barcelona and us with Atletico, in the time that he has been with the national team, I wasn’t… But I insist, he transmits this to me: He wants to win. I have no doubt that Messi has to play in a team that knows what it has to do to win. What kind of play? It doesn’t matter, that’s a lie, he plays for a team that wants to win and is prepared to win. Don’t think about him, think about the team.”
