Argentina and Fiorentina defender Germán Pezzella has tested positive for COVID-19.

With the football season suspended, more and more cases of the virus are surfacing. With the pandemic severly hitting Italy, defender Pezzella is the first Argentine player to get tested positive for the virus.

Fiorentina announced it on Twitter. A speedy recovery to Pezzella and everyone.

Javier Mascherano is one of not so many players who have made their national team debut before even playing for a senior club side.

Mascherano was still with River Plate and current Leeds United coach Marcelo Bielsa was managing the Argentina national team. It was Argentina vs. Uruguay on July 16, 2003 in a friendly match. A match which ended in a 2-2 draw with Diego Milito scoring both times for Argentina.

South American World Cup qualifiers suspended due to COVID-19, updates to come

CONMEBOL has confirmed that this month’s World Cup qualifiers and next week’s Copa Libertadors matches have been suspended.

There were rumors that they would be cancelled and after CONMEBOL had sent FIFA The request, it has now been confirmed. This month’s matches have been suspended.

Argentina play Ecuador at La Bombonera while going to La Paz to play Bolivia and while those two matches won’t change, they won’t be happening this month.

FIFA announced that the matches are postponed and details of those will be discussed and announced soon.

South America’s governing football body CONMEBOL have sent an official request to FIFA in order to get the World Cup qualifiers suspended.

Shortly after Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni announced his list of players for this month’s qualifiers, rumors starter circulating that the matches for this month would be suspended. The corona virus has spread globally and has instilled travel bans across countries.

No confirnation yet by FIFA as to whether they will be suspended or not but all signs point to a delay in the start of the qualifiers.
