World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 41, Maxi RODRÍGUEZ

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 41 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 41st place we have Maxi RODRIGUEZ scoring in the 41st minute against Serbia and Montenegro.

It’s not every day Argentina scores six goals in a match, let alone at a FIFA World Cup. But on June 16, 2006, José PÉKERMAN’s boys did just that. It was Argentina’s second match at the 2006 tournament having just come off a 2-1 win against Ivory Coast. The team were looking to put away the ghosts of 2002 in South Korea and Japan. And did they ever.

Maxi RODRÍGUEZ opened the scoring after just six minutes. Arguably the goal of the tournament followed 25 minutes after the opening goal when Esteban CAMBIASSO finished off the play of the tournament, a goal which came after just 24 passes. Words can’t do that goal justice. And just 10 minutes after that, in the 41st minute, Maxi RODRIGUEZ all but sealed the win for Argentina.

A second goal from Maxi RODRÍGUEZ, one of Argentina’s standout players of the tournament gave Argentina a 3-0 lead going into half time. Javier SAVIOLA’s blocked shot by the goalkeeper rolled onto the line before Maxi pounced on it and cartwheeled his way to the corner flag celebrating.

Argentina went on to score three more goals in the second half, one by Hernan CRESPO to make it 4-0, the fifth added by some kid called Lionel MESSI and a sixth by Carlos TEVEZ.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:

1. Roberto ABBONDANZIERI
2. Roberto AYALA
3. Juan Pablo SORÍN
6. Gabriel HEINZE
7. Javier SAVIOLA
8. Javier MASCHERANO
9. Hernán CRESPO
10. Juan Roman RIQUELME
18. Maxi RODRÍGUEZ
21. Nicolas BURDISSO
22. Luis GONZÁLEZ

Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI tells Mauro ICARDI no to World Cup

There are reports that Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI has told Mauro ICARDI that he will not be going to the World Cup.

After meeting with Juventus duo Gonzalo HIGUAIN and Paulo DYBALA, Jorge SAMPAOLI sat down with Lucas BIGLIA of AC Milan as well as Mauro ICARDI of Inter. The big (although maybe not nevessarily shocking) news is that SAMPAOLI apparently told the Inter captain that he will not be going to the World Cup with Argentina.

According to La Nacion, the reason why ICARDI will not be called-up for the World Cup is due to his inability to gel properly with the rest of the team on the pitch. The coach will reportedly opt for Sergio AGUERO and Gonzalo HIGUAIN as the European based strikers.

Cesar Luis MENOTTI: “SAMPAOLI accepted the rules of the game”

In a recent interview, World Cup winning coach Cesar Luis MENOTTI gave his thoughts on the 1978 FIFA World Cup, the Argentina National Team and Jorge SAMPAOLI.

A man of structure and a man who knows how to win, legendary figured in Argentine football Cesar Luis MENOTTI stated that winning the World Cup would be useless if there’s no structure afterwards. Here’s what he had to say:

“After the 1974 World Cup ended, everyone left. There were no players left. BRINDISI, PERFUMO, BABINGTON, BIANCHI. There were no players. They take me to Argentina after I won the title with Huracan in 1973. They usually pick the ones that win the titles.

“We started from there. We started a national team from the interior of the country. Some great players came from there. GALVAN, VALENCIA, PASSARELLA that came and was not yet a starter at River. LUQUE played in Paraná. BUFALO (Funes) was at Unión. It was a good team.

“I had three goalkeepers. In the first tour, GATTI was going to start. In the second, it was going to be FILLOL. FILLOL wanted to be in both and I told him, ‘As of this moment, you are my fourth goalkeeper.

“GATTI starts and he gets injured and all of a sudden the fourth goalkeeper comes in and quickly become the starter. I was convinced we were going to play the final. I started to look at the fixture and I said, “That’s it, we’re playing the Dutch. That was an incredible side.”

Cesar Luis MENOTTI on Rinus MICHELS and the Netherlands:

“They had Rinus MICHELS who was a very studious coach when it came to the South American game. He knew it was impossible to compete against a football that was technically superior based on strength alone. He tried to find a balance.

“MICHELS looked to find both good players and a high press. You die in there on the pitch and you don’t realize, I didn’t realize it. I had ARDILES playing every match and he did so with a fracture. The doctor would inject him and the at halftime do it again.”

Cesar Luis MENOTTI on ARDILES and winning the World Cup:

“ARDILES would play like that and then he could not practice. In the final we could not sub him during extra time, you had to do it before. The team doctor says to me, ‘take out ARDILES’. I wanted to hit him right then. I reacted because he was limping and brought in LARROSA.

“What was emotional was the end. We were all in the dressing room, with our heads down, filled with blood. Everyone was beat up… it was a war on that pitch. There was this sadness and HOLGUIN comes up and says to me, ‘What now?’

“I came to realize that there is no point to playing different football if there is no solid structures in place. There was joy, we were the champions, the cup stays there and football went into a deculturization and went into a dark place-business.”

Cesar Luis MENOTTI on Julio GRONDONA and Argentina:

“I believe that until 1990, GRONDONA respected how the national team was run. After that, I believe he forgot about the national team and became a figure within FIFA. Won the World Cups in 78 and 86, runner-up in 90., youth champ in 79 and MARADONA in all his glory. All that made him the owner of CONMEBOL and then HAVELANGE dies.

“Being rebelliousness and discontent of the people came about because of the deculturization of football. There’s been a cultural debacle at the clubs and in the stands. They sell off players, they sell the national team to whomever. It became a business.

So when Argentina do not win the World Cup, they bring out everything from their clubs. The going to pitch, the barrabravas… the people are in bad shape. They are against football. Even if we won the World Cup, we celebrate but nothing changes.

“Let’s say we win the World Cup in Russia, but the presidents don’t change their structure and they don’t create a project. The World Cup is worthless. We’ll be happy for 30 days, but then reality sets back in. There’s no structure, visiting fans can’t go to matches.”

Cesar Luis MENOTTI on Jorge SAMPAOLI:

“We’re at an important stage. Things will not get better if Argentina win the World Cup. Things will recover if there is a project and a leader that thinks. You have to believe in them because they are just starting. (SAMPAOLI) doesn’t have the obligation of having enough time.

“SAMPAOLI accepted the rules of the game. But I want to know what happens afterwards with Argentine football.”

A big thank you to Juan G. Arango for the translation!

World Cup countdown: 50 days, Argentina moment number 42, Pedro PASCULLI

As part of the 50 days, 50 Argentina World Cup moments, we will be counting down the top 50 Argentina moments at a World Cup using the daily number.

We are just 42 days until the start of the FIFA World Cup and in 42nd place we have Pedro PASCULLI finishing off an absolutely lovely team play against Uruguay at the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

It was Argentina’s Round of 16 match against Uruguay. A battle of the river plate and a repeat of the 1930 FIFA World Cup final. Two time world champions Uruguay against then one time world champions Argentina. A match decided by a goal late in the first half from Pedro PASCULLI.

An absolutely fantastic team goal, similar to the one the 2006 team scored against Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Not to mention the team was also wearing the dark blue shirt as were the 2006 squad. There was a certain fluidity of the passes, a back heel by BURRUCHAGA, a short dribble by MARADONA, a cutting pass inside the area and a clean finish by PASCULLI.

Here was Argentina’s starting XI for the match:

18. Nery PUMPIDO
2. Sergio BATISTA
5. Jose BROWN
7. Jorge BURRUCHAGA
9. Jose CUCIUFFO
10. Diego MARADONA
11. Jorge VALDAO
13. Oscar GARRE
14. Ricardo GIUSTI
17. Pedro PASCULLI
19. Oscar RUGGERI

Report: Jorge SAMPAOLI confirms to HIGUAIN, DYBALA their World Cup spots

Argentina National Team coach Jorge SAMPAOLI has reportedly told both Gonzalo HIGUAIN and Paulo DYBALA that they will make the World Cup squad.

Jorge SAMPAOLI, who is presently on his European trip, met with Juventus duo Gonzalo HIGUAIN and Paulo DYBALA on Wednesday night. Per a report by TyC Sports, SAMPAOLI confirmed to HIGUAIN that he will have a spot in the squad for the World Cup.

However, HIGUAIN isn’t the only one who’s spot is reportedly confirmed. Per a separate report from Manuel OLIVARI of DirecTV and TNT Sports, SAMPAOLI told DYBALA that unless something weird happens, he will also make the squad of 23 for the World Cup.

It’s being rumored that the matches against Italy and Spain are what made SAMPAOLI fully change his mind regarding DYBALA’s inclusion into the Argentina team.

Depending on if you’re a fan of both players or only one of them, this news can be great or bitter sweet.
