Argentina 2021 Year in Review – Top 15 moments, part 2

2

The year 2021 brought a lot of memories when it came to Argentine football with some good and some not as good.

While the biggest of all may have come in July, there were many moments which stole the headlines before July and after the Copa America win. In this three part article, we will be reviewing the top 15 moments in Argentine football of the past 365 days.

This article will focus on Moments 9-4 with the video below!

With the Copa America beginning at the start of June, by the end of May, no one was even sure if the tournament was going to be played. Initially, it was supposed to be held both in Argentina and Colombia. But unrest within Colombia and COVID meant that they would drop out of being the hosts.

This left Argentina as the remaining host but even that did not happen. The rise of COVID in the country ultimately led to the decision of having to host the tournament elsewhere.

Chile, Paraguay and even the United States were looked at as possible destinations. However, Brazil would become the hosts as the tournament would be held in the country for the second consecutive edition.

Argentine players make up not only many of the top leagues but also many of the top teams. Beginning in Spain, Diego Simeone coached Angel Correa and Atletico Madrid to a La Liga triumph. Lionel Messi would not win La Liga but would win the Copa del Rey with FC Barcelona.

In England, Sergio Agüero won his last ever club trophy with Manchester City as they lifted the Premier League to go with his EFL Cup. Lautaro Martinez would win Serie A with Inter with Paulo Dybala winning Coppa Italia with Juventus.

Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Mauro Icardi would not win Ligue 1 but would lift the Coupe de France with Paris Saint-Germain and Mauricio Pochettino.

In the Netherlands, Nicolas Tagliafico and Lisandro Martinez would win the league in Ajax.

Geronimo Rulli and Juan Foyth would win the Europa League with Rulli being the hero in the penalty shootout for Villarreal. While Agüero would not win the Champions League with Manchester City, it would be Willy Caballero with Chelsea who would lift the trophy.

If someone were to ask you if you could one day see Javier Mascherano coaching somewhere, you were likely to answer yes, you could see him as a coach. On December 9, it was announced that the former Argentine international would take charge of the Argentina U20 team as of the start of January.

He will replace Fernando Batista. Mascherano took part in four FIFA World Cup tournaments for Argentina, won a treble with FC Barcelona and well, anyone who has watched football the past 15 years will know exactly what he brings to the table.

While it was never much in doubt this time around, it’s a great feeling when it happens. Argentina qualified for the 2022 World Cup! On November 16, following Argentina’s 0-0 draw against Brazil in the World Cup qualifiers, other results in South America meant that Lionel Scaloni’s team would book their ticket to Qatar.

With four matches remaining in qualification, Ecuador getting a 2-0 win against Chile meant that mathematically, the Copa America champions would be at the World Cup next year!

But it was not without some controversy as the team could have likely secured their spot before. A controversial match in September against Brazil meant that their World Cup qualifying match would be called off after only minutes.

Brazilian officials would storm the pitch as according to them, Emiliano Martinez, Cristian Romero and Gio Lo Celso were not allowed to play. Protocols due to COVID when entering the country would have meant that the three players from England would not have been allowed to participate.

However, the other side of the story is that there was an agreement in place between CONMEBOL, the teams and the countries to allow exceptions. The result of the match has not yet been determined.

Now in the top 5, we are going to talk about a top 5 Manchester City legend. Sergio Agüero would leave Manchester City after a decade at the club along with dozens of memories.

During his time at Manchester, Agüero would win the Premier League Golden Boot, two Player of the Year awards at Manchester City, a City goal of the month and several Premier League Player of the Month and PFA Team of the Year wins.

However, no accolade will likely be as big as the one goal which he scored against QPR back in 2012. The goal which won City their first league trophy in decades and one which would automatically cement the Argentine’s spot in the annals of time after just one season.

He would leave City to beautiful Barcelona where it looked like he would be playing alongside great friend Lionel Messi. But as he put pen to paper to his contract bringing him back to Spain, no one knew what would await the City legend.

Coming in at number 4 is number 7 for Lionel Messi. Ballon d’Or number 7 for the Argentine as he would win it in on November 29, 2021 for a record 7th time. He would beat one of the favorites Roberto Lewandowski and even Jorginho for the award. Winning the Copa America with Argentina as well as being named the Best Player of the tournament and finishing as the tournament’s top scorer and most assists, as mentioned, he would also win the Copa del Rey with FC Barcelona. Oh and he would win the Pichichi, La Liga’s top scorer for the season.

Messi would be quoted as saying:

“Today I’m here in Paris. I am very happy, really, very happy, I really want to continue to fight and reach new objectives. I don’t know how many more years but I am really enjoying myself. I thank my team-mates at Barça, Paris & Argentina.

“I especially want to thank the squad and the coaching staff of the Argentina national team. I was able to achieve the dream I wanted so much. In the end, it happened and this award is in large part of what we did at the Copa America. This is part of them.”

This concludes the list from 9-4, with one more article looking at the top 3 coming shortly!

Sergio Romero spoke in an interview about a return to the Argentina national team, Manchester United not allowing him to leave and his new club Venezia.

Romero returned to Argentina on holiday where he spoke to the media. The 34 year old joined Serie A club Venezia where he has kept three clean sheets in 13 matches, allowing 22 goals. Speaking to TyC Sports, here is what he had to say in regards to the Argentina national team and a possible return:

“Since previous years, the Argentina national team has always been a candidate. The guys did very well this year. They were crowned Copa America champions, which was something that all Argentine’s desired. Now, they have already secured qualification for Qatar 2022.

“We will be on the outside helping, collaborating or fighting to win a place.”

The Argentine also commented on Manchester United:

“I had a lot of chances to go to various clubs but they wouldn’t let me leave. That was something very difficult because at the very least I was used to being on the bench the last few years. When many clubs want you and you can’t go, it’s difficult.”

He also spoke about Venezia:

“I’m happy to be able to play again and to have the opportunity to show that I’m still active. I found a suitable club, with new people, who really want to grow. They are willing to invest to stay in Serie A and grow the club.”

Argentina 2021 Year in Review – Top 15 moments, part 1

10

The year 2021 brought a lot of memories when it came to Argentine football with some good and some not as good.

While the biggest of all may have come in July, there were many moments which stole the headlines before July and after the Copa America win. In this three part article, we will be reviewing the top 15 moments in Argentine football of the past 365 days.

This article will focus on Moments 15-10 with the video below!

Number 15 on our list is focused on one man, one coach and this headline came extremely early in the year. On January 2nd, 2021, Paris Saint-Germain announced that Mauricio Pochettino would become the new coach at the club after agreeing an 18 month contract. He would replace Thomas Tuchel who would go on to manage Chelsea. Pochettino had also previously played with PSG 20 years ago.

This would be Pochettino’s first managerial job in France after having spent five years in England managing Tottenham Hotspur. During his time in London, he would reach a Champions League final with the club. He would go on to coach Angel Di Maria, Leandro Paredes and Mauro Icardi with a big name joining them later during the year. On July 23, Pochettino would sign a contract extension, one which would keep him at the club until 2023.

Number 14 focuses on another former Argentine international and coach, this time in South America. Hernan Crespo, the former Argentina striker would make the headlines but this time as a coach. Crespo would coach Defensa y Justicia to a Copa Sudamericana trophy following a 3-0 win vs. Lanus. It was an all Argentine final but it was Crespo winning his first piece of silverware as a coach and helping the club to their first ever trophy.

Number 13 keeps the focus on coaches, it’s a third former Argentine international and the most successful of the three, Marcelo Gallardo. The Argentine has made a name for himself across South America winning trophy after trophy, two of which are Copa Libertadories titles. The River Plate legend would win the Argentine Primera Division and the Trofeo de Campeones de la Liga Profesional.

This would bring his tally to 14 trophies won as a manager with the club and making him one of the most wanted coaches in world football.

Number 12: A name which we will see on this list more than once, Lionel Messi. A player who continues to make and break records, Messi would surpass Pele’s all time record of 77 goals for Brazil to become the South American with the most goals ever for their country. With his first goal for the Argentina national team coming against Croatia in a friendly match back in 2006, to his first World Cup goal against Serbia and Montenegro also in 2006, Messi has come a long way since his first goals.

Messi would start Argentina’s World Cup qualifying match against Bolivia on September 9, 2021 on 76 goals, one behind Pele. The Argentine would score a hattrick to reach 79 goals and overtake the Brazilian. He would score the next month, in the 3-0 win vs. Uruguay to reach 80 goals.

Number 11: Several former Argentina national team players would retire in 2021. Five players from the 2014 World Cup squad which made the final and one from the 2010 World Cup squad would quit playing football.

From the 2014 squad, Ezequiel Garay, Maxi Rodriguez, Augusto Fernandez, Ricardo Alvarez and Sergio Aguero would all announce their retirement due to different reasons. For the likes of Garay and Alvarez, injuries took a tole on their bodies. Maxi Rodriguez and Augusto Fernandez decided to stop due to age while Sergio Aguero would be advised to stop playing due to a heart arrhythmia.

Jonas Gutierrez would announce his retirement at the age of 38.

Number 10: It was an Olympic year for Argentina and possibly one to forget. Once more, the Olympic team was eliminated in the group stage of the Olympics. The two time gold medalists in men’s football were missing several players as then coach Fernando Batista did not have everyone at his disposal.

Eight of the players which won the Copa America in 2021 were eligible for the Olympic team.
Cristian Romero
Lautaro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez
Exequiel Palacios
Gonzalo Montiel
Julian Alvarez
Nicolas Dominguez and
Nicolas Gonzalez

All eight of those players could have made the cut. In addition to Juan Foyth, Matias Zaracho, Matias Palacios, Marcos Senesi, Leonardo Balerdi, Dario Sarmiento, Cristian Medina and even Paulo Dybala could have been picked as an overage player.

This concludes the list from 15-10, with two more articles looking at the top 9 coming shortly!
