5

Tottenham and Atalanta have reportedly come to an agreement regarding the transfer of Cristian Romero.

The Argentina Copa America winner looks to be on his way out of Italy as he has been linked with a move to Tottenham since the end of the Copa America. The two clubs have reportedly agreed on a transfer of €50 million with an additional 5 million in bonuses.

It would be a transfer which would keep him at the club until 2026. In addition, if reports are to be believed, Romero has already agreed personal terms with Tottenham.

Per César Luis Merlo, the transfer is not yet finalized as Atalanta themselves have to finalize a transfer first.

Nicolas Gonzalez on winning the Copa America with Argentina, Lionel Messi

55

Nicolas Gonzalez spoke about winning the Copa America with Argentina, what it meant for Lionel Messi, his response to the Brazilian players, Lionel Scaloni and the World Cup.

Gonzalez was a regular starter for Argentina in their Copa America winning campaign. Despite not starting the final itself, Gonzalez was often in the starting eleven, on the left side of the pitch. And while he didn’t start the final, he was present as Lionel Messi gave his speech before the match. Speaking in an interview with Ole, here is what Gonzalez revealed about Messi:

“Before the final, Messi told us that playing against them (Brazil) at the Maracaná was a miracle. And that they had the cup there for us to to win it. When be said that, more than one of us got goosebumps.

“When the match just ended, we all went to hug Messi because we knew what it meant for him. And also for Kun (Aguero), for Fideo (Angel Di Maria) and Otamendi, that have been fighting for it for so long. That it happened this way is something unique that they won’t ever forget.

“On a day to day basis, Messi was very comfortable and happy with all the boys. And this was later reflected on the pitch. You have to enjoy Messi because for the Argentine, he is everything.

“Seeing him as happy as a kid in a toy store is engraved in the head of every player.”

In addition, Gonzalez also commented on Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni:

“I’m very thankful to Scaloni. There are coaches that back you a lot and he is one of them. He backs his player to the death. He waited for me until the end. I enjoy Scaloni, he makes me play freely. There’s a lot of joy in every one of the players.”

As we posted a few days ago, there was back and forth posts between a few of the Argentina players and Richarlison of Brazil. Gonzalez even spoke about that:

“How are we going to tell the Brazilians something? Leave them alone, that they keep crying. I think the pictures of Dibu (Emiliano Martinez) and Rodrigo (De Paul) were very good. It was incredible how much I laughed when I saw them but let them talk because we are happy with (winning) the Copa America in their home.”

In regards to what and how much it cost the team to win the Copa America:

“It was very difficult to be isolated for 45 days. We all went for one objective: To win the Copa America. Every day we were focused on that, no one ever deviated away from it. Thankfully it happened but we thought a lot about our families, some became fathers and couldn’t see their kids. But we were focused in bringing joy to the people and we came back from Brazil happy.”

And finally, Gonzalez commented on the World Cup:

“The Argentine will always ask for more. We will do our best to fight until the very end at the World Cup in Qatar, just as we have been doing and how the guys before us did.”

Regarded as not only one of the best attacking young talents but one of the best talents in Argentina, the 20 year old is set to be leaving Velez and joining Atlanta United. Per a tweet by César Luis Merlo, there’s a verbal agreement for him to join the 2018 MLS Cup champions.

Part of the Argentina Olympic team, Almada would be the sixth Argentine player at the club. He would play alongside Olympic team mate Esequiel Barco. The other four Argentine players are Franco Ibarra, Marcelino Moreno, Alan Franco and Santiago Sosa.

Per reports, the transfer fee would be in the region of $15 million for him, on a four year contract.

Rodrigo De Paul and Emiliano Martinez respond to Brazilian players taunts on Instagram

54

Two players from the Argentina national team, Rodrigo De Paul and Emiliano Martínez, responded via Instagram to the Brazilian players that fan of Argentina’s elimination at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Brazilian player Douglas Luiz uploaded a boomerang to his Instagram stories where we can see him, along with Richarlison, Matheus Cunha, and Reinier Jesus, mocking the Argentina U-23 at the stadium where the Argentine’s were eliminated after drawing 1-1 vs. Spain.

Richarlison, who played the whole Copa America 2021 final vs. Argentina, then re-posted it.

“Bye little brothers.”

While the Argentina fans exploded on social media against the Brazilian players, Rodrigo De Paul responded by uploading to his Instagram stories a fantastic picture of the Copa America 2021 final, with Richarlison in it.

De Paul would later go and delete the photo from his Instagram stories.

Argentina’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who is Douglas Luiz’s teammate at Aston Villa, would also respond to the mockery of the Brazilian players. Writing the same but in Portuguese, this was Martínez’s reply via his Instagram stories:

But the crossfire didn’t end there. Later on, Richarlison would upload two more Instagram stories in reply to the Argentine’s’ comments. In the first one he is kissing the 2019 Copa America trophy, while in the other one he posted a picture of Pele, where he refers to the fact that Brazil has more World Cups than Argentina: “Who has more? We have five.”

But the “social media fight” between the Argentina players and Richarlison did not start today. After the Brazil U-23 team defeated Germany 4-2 in their opening game of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Leandro Paredes answered the following to an Instagram post of TyC Sports where they were praising Richarlison’s performance:

Giovani Lo Celso and Ángel Di María laughed at Paredes’ reply.

Players missing for Argentina U23 team, what went wrong at the Tokyo Olympics

Argentina Olympic coach Fernando Batista could not be entirely blamed for his team crashing out in the group stages of the tournament as once more, an Olympic coach did not have the entire backing of the clubs.

For the second consecutive Olympic tournament, Argentina were eliminated in the first round. After winning two back to back gold medals, the first in Athens in 2004 and the second coming in Beijing four years later, Argentina have not gotten close to a podium finish ever since.

At the time, reigning Olympic champions in football, the defending gold medalists failed to qualify for the 2012 London games and in 2016, just like in Tokyo, they were out after three matches. Reading the names of the 2008 gold medal winning squad is like reading an all star team of players.

Lionel Messi, Juan Roman Riquelme, Angel Di Maria, Sergio Aguero, Javier Mascherano, Ever Banega, Pablo Zabaleta, Ezequiel Lavezzi and many others were responsible for the team winning the tournament.

Going back even further in 2004, once more, a star studded team. Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano, Roberto Ayala, Javier Saviola, Gabriel Heinze, Fabricio Coloccini, Kily Gonzalez and the list goes on and on.

This time around, there were arguably more “big” names left out than those that were called-up. But maybe not much of the blame can fall on Batista.

Cristian Romero
Lautaro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez
Exequiel Palacios
Gonzalo Montiel
Julian Alvarez
Nicolas Dominguez
Nicolas Gonzalez

All eight of those players won the Copa America with Argentina. However, all of them were eligible for the Olympic team as well. In addition, the likes of Juan Foyth (Villarreal), Matias Zaracho (Atletico Mineiro), Matias Palacios (FC Basel), Marcos Senesi (Feyenoord), Leonardo Balerdi (Olympique Marseille), Dario Sarmiento (Estudiantes), Cristian Medina (Boca Juniors), Exequiel Zeballos (Boca Juniors), could have been in the side as well.

Fernando Batista was allowed to take three overage players to Tokyo. He had initially picked two in goalkeeper Jeremías Ledesma and Lucas Alario. Ultimately, it was only Ledesma who went as Alario ended up missing the games due to injury. That left the spot open for two overage players.

Paulo Dybala, who was completely left out of the Copa America squad, could have been selected as one of the players over the age restrictions. Mauro Icardi has yet to take part in a tournament for Argentina. He was another one who stayed at home.

Which begs the question as to why none of those players mentioned made the squad. You could make the argument and say that the eight players which won the Copa America would need the rest of the summer off after a long club season. That would be understandable.

However, it’s odd that Batista was not relying at all on Foyth, Zaracho, Palacios, Senesi, Balerdi, Sarmiento, Medina or Zeballos. The team played two friendly matches in June prior to the Olympics. Matches which Dybala, Icardi, Palacios, Senesi or Balerdi (all of which are based in Europe) could have used to have been integrated into the team.

It’s no secret that some of the bigger clubs like Boca Juniors and River Plate back in Argentina would not allow their players to take part in the Olympics. And perhaps that is why we didn’t get a single player from any of those two clubs. Since winning the second gold medal in Beijing, some Argentine clubs have become somewhat hesitant in releasing their players for the tournament.

There was a clash between then Olympic coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino and the Argentine clubs back in 2016 when the clubs reportedly refused to release the players for the games in Rio. Instead, Martino stepped down as coach and 1986 World Cup winner Julio Olarticoechea ended up managing the team. He would go on to reveal that he had to ask his daughter for money because there was nothing from the Argentine federation:

“Caldera, my assistant, does a thousand things. He earns 18,000 pesos per month and for three months now he hasn’t gotten paid. He organized everything for the guys, he’s helped us a lot.”

“Yesterday, I called my wife and told her to take money from my daughter, who is a baker and earns good money. I spoke to the higher up’s (AFA leaders) that we needed money. And I’m taking money from my daughter. It’s something to cry about but it’s reality.”

While 2016 was a total fiasco, this time around, it was slightly different. Looking beyond the player selection, Batista himself got it wrong more often than not throughout the tournament. Some questionable decisions and a clear lack of a playing style was there for all to see. But some people underperformed as well.

Alexis Mac Allister was one of the stars for Argentina and was one of the main reasons why the team qualified for the Olympics. But even he underperformed.

Arguably Argentina’s best player of the tournament was the only overage player, Jeremías Ledesma of Cadiz. A clean sheet, 11 saves and four goals allowed in three matches, the team was not eliminated because of him. If anything, the team still had a chance because he was making those saves. But as mentioned, it was the lack of proper tactics, players underperforming and several names missing from the squad which meant that Argentina are out of the tournament.
