Lionel MESSI is the only survivor from Argentina’s 3-0 win in 2005 against Qatar.

Argentina’s last game against Qatar came over 10 years ago with Juan Román RIQUELME, Julio CRUZ and Roberto AYALA scoring all three goals. Here was the starting line-up for that game:

  5. So many of us being brilliant now…just put everything on Scaloni. Where were you all the year…? I didn’t read much against Scaloni till Copa here. After two games..and everything went wrong…now everyone wants one scapegoat.. that’s Scaloni.
    What players are doing..why don’t they run..why don’t they fight..I remember most of the comments after Brazil match. Where is that spirit..?
    Most of us have praised him many times before Copa. Now everyone forgot that including me…!

      I too supported him, but he keeps selecting players out of position. the players share the largest chunk of the blame.

      this is exactly TRUE.
      the coach will not teach players basic passing techniques, how to run to create space and position themselves to receive the ball, those are first team players we are talking about, not youth development.

      Our players could not make basic passes in the last matches except side ways and backward.
      Let us hope we will see something different today

        Because they are supposed to be fed with a system and a philosophy rather than asking them to do what they do best….
        Thats why we need a coach which scaloni is clearly not till now i did not see any system or any formation or any philosophy in his matches.

        • Scaloni is in limbo with his ideas(poor decision making) . Players can still play better than that even if his tactics suck, if you noticed, they could not even pass or receive the ball.

    • As most of us have stated this numerous times here , Our defense under Sampaoli was woeful. Our elimination from the world cup was solely because of weak defense and Sampaoli’s poor tactics. Our defense was so vulnerable because of high line that every-time our opposition pressed us we almost conceded. When Scaloni took over, his ultra defensive strategy immediately started paying dividends. Everyone talked about how having solid defense should be our number 1 priority. We all were under the impression that Scaloni will gradually improve our offense aspect too. However the more games we played , Scaloni inability to attack became clearer. Soon everyone realized Scaloni has absolutely no freaking idea how to build up an attack!! Injury to key players like Battaglia and Palacios did play some part but Scaloni’s inabilty to force his players to stop from making back or side passes to Messi when others are in better position proves that he is clearly not ready to work at this level and not to mention that Octagonal formation!!! SMH

      • Well explained, why he had most of our support and what we expected from him.
        I still think he should have called Ascacibar and Banega instead of PIzzaro and Suarez, to help him in shielding the defense and build on transitioning the ball forward. but since he did not call such players, then he should have an alternative in his mind. 2 strikers in Aguero and Lautaro should be enough and call more effective midfielders for that missing link

        I remember most of us here…were against Scaloni after Venezuela game but everybody was complaining about his 3 man back.

        • I criticised him after Colombia and another match last year. I remember Scaloni using an unorganized pressing where the team were literally cut into two pieces while defending. I guess none of you paid much attention because the idea of “Young blood” in terms of coaching was too spicy back then. Only guy agreed with me was probably PAimar. Yeah, i feel like a genius now 😁

  6. I think this team and coach strategy is
    1- just pass to messi even if there are 10 players marking him then stop and watch greatness. Messi will imitate Maradona and go wild beating the whole team of England and score the best goal the world ever witnessed snd do that in every game untie we are champions and yes no need for good keeper or good defense and good midfield and no need at all for a coach as Messi the superman will do it all it is just the regulations required a team of 11 on the field otherwise we will send messi and it will be just fine maybe we should clone Maradona and save money on the rest;)

    • Even Messi has beaten 4-5 players several times. I have seen him doing this consistently. Messi also scored a similar kind of goal that Maradona scored.But he is almost 32 now. So we can’t expect him to beat entire Qatar team to score a goal. I still believe he will deliver tonight. I have positive optimism towards tonight’s tie breaker. All of the Argentina players have to give their hearts out until the final whistle.

  7. Honestly this time with this team even our neighborhood street team can beat zombi slow physically, mentally weak lead by inexperienced avg coach Argentina. Only God can help us not to get humiliated. Messi should play sick and skip the game and take first flight to europe and enjoy the rest of his vacation.

  8. Plain and simple., win and you’re in, they need to get it done for themselves first and for all ARGENTINA fan all over the world. I am hoping that playing 2 games together already in a short span would have created some sort of chemistry to go ahead and just PLAY for a change.

  9. If we cant beat Qatar, there shouldnt be any excuse not to fire Scolani. This is not about giving enough time for our manager…..we have been playing like a team with players that never meet each other until the kick off whistle.

    Sampaoli’s team still showed some flair in our last 2 WC games. We conceided too much but we’re still scoring great goals in those games. Hell, we would have beaten Iceland if Messi scores his penalty. This team in comparison, they cant even create more than 2 clear chances in 190 minutes.

    I already said the players looks nervous when they walked in the tunnel, and it really shows during the game. When players like Messi, Aguero and Lo Celso had a very terrible first touch and couldnt keep the ball for 2 seconds, you know they’re mentally aint prepare for the game. Remember that Scolani is young manager without any pedigree and he became our manager by default not by merit.

    You could say we’re impatient with Sampa and he came in when we’re on the bring of qualification failure but Scolani ? 8 games with zero preasure and then we arrive in tournament in this kind of form?

    • He should be fired even if ARG wins this Copa, nm not advancing and hire a proper coach ASAP. WC qualifiers start soon and the last thing they need is going through the same BS they went through in the last one.

      • Well, he certainly should be fired. If we do beat Qatar I believe it will be through some individual briliance (maybe Messi, Aguero or Lautaro) or by capitalizing Qatar mistakes. Obviously we wont beat them through a good gameplan cause Scolani will never come up with one.

        We probably will win this one in similar fashion as in 2011 in which we failed to win the first 2 games but won 3-0 in last group game. The first goal came after long range shot being deflected by the goalkeeper and Aguero was there to tap in. We will need to create that kind of situation to score.

        • If team does well..this is individual brilliance…if team do worse..this is coach issue…why like that…

          If we crashed out… Scaloni will be fired that’s certain.

          • BECAUSE the man is clueless …….the team has no shape, no structure, no speed, no strategy, you don’t know if they want to defend or attack because neither has worked so far and the only time there was hope to beat either Colombia or Paraguay was when Messi was given an inch to attack in the box when none was given before and unfortunately did not score.

    • I would have fired him right after the Paraguay match and appoint one of Aimar, Ayala or Samuel to take over for the rest of the tournament and persuade Gallardo to be our full-time coach!! I also don’t mind the master Biesla taking over the job if Gallardo denies !!

    • Had Sampaoli abstained from playing high line defense and played to the strength of the oldies we could have advanced much further !!

    • If argentina had a sensible coach, this won’t matter. Physicality will never dominate against technical abilities. But with Scaloni, I’m very scared of this game. Messi is also very short player but he won the battle against so called tall physical players with the help of his god gifted technical abilities. Aguero is another guy. Most of the all time best players lacks physicality.

      • Yea Aguero scored a header against France by sneaking behind defenders, he also scored with header in Copa 2015. Messi scored in CL final with a header and he’s a midget. Pasarella scored tons of a header in his career and he’s a short guy aswell.

        If the player constantly making run, being mobile to cover empty space ,sneaking behind his markers , height and size will never be an issue.

  11. AFA MADE A BIG MISTAKE BY APPOINTING SCALONI,HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO COACH ARGENTINA. AFTER WORLD CUP DEBACLE SOME OF OUR MUNDO FRIENDS WANTED AFA NOT TO APPOINT A PERMANENT COACH AT THAT TIME. AS A RESULT SCALONI GOT THE CHANCE TO LEAD ARGENTINA. WE WERE GOING THROUGH TRANSITION, BUT THE RESULT IS GOING FROM BAD TO WORSE. I KNOW TRANSITION MAY TAKE LONGER TIME THAN EXPECTED, BUT DAY BY DAY LITTLE BIT OF IMPROVEMENT SHOULD BE THERE. NOW WITH SCALONI WE ARE ON THE VERGE OF GETTING ELIMINATED FROM COPA, WE DONT KNOW WHETHER WE WILL WIN OR NOT AGAINST QATAR. I AM MISSING SABELLA. I KNOW HE COMMITTED THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN THE FINAL BY REPLACING LAVEZZI BY KUN. STILL I PREFER SABELLA BECAUSE OF HIS MATCH READING ABILITY. I STILL REMEMBER HOW HE USED SOME BELOW AVERAGE PLAYERS LIKE GUINAZU, SOSA, CLEMENTE. HE BROUGHT THE BEST OUT OF MESSI. SCALONI CANT READ OPPONENT, NEITHER DOES HE HAVE ANY PLANNING. FOR REJUVINATING THIS TEAM WE NEED SABELL AGAIN IRRESPECTIVE OF THE RESULT OF THIS COPA.##############################BRING SABELLA BACK.

He has worked so hard to become the best possible individual and team players but all his teammates do is give him the ball and vomit or meditate on the sidelines. I hope Argentina win this year. So he can finally retire peacefully. Fuck the world cup, with a shit team like this, you can’t expect much more from Leo.

  13. Argentina getting out of the group may be a good thing. If that will get us a football manager. I think in that scenario AFA holes have no other options but to find a football manager in place of the guy who has been doing press conference as manager, receiving salary & getting praised by some fans for almost an year..

    But I don’t think that will happen today. With all respect to the money bags of Asia, I don’t see Argentina losing today.

    In any case I don’t want Lionel Messi’s last match to be marked as a lose or draw against Qatar.
    My prediction : 3_0 Argentina.

  14. Look at how the players move back then. That this team didn’t win any thing proves how curse we were!

    Now we stay and walk like the 40 years old with no ideas! I am pretty sure the oldies in 2005 now if they come back will play better than the current team.

    • Its not about the ABILITY of the players. Its the mentality difference between Messi and the team. Messi is a team player and tries to set up his team and create chances. His team’s mentality is to give it to Messi. When Messi passes, they don’t even TRY to create their own chance. Instead they just pass it to Messi in a crowded place with like 5 opposition players. And if Messi loses the ball, they blame him!

      • Yep, when Messi is there, all they think is how to pass the ball to him! Messi is too big for all of them. In this situation, the coach must act to balance the team, but Scaloni is clueless as well.
